Among the important character issues about first-round draft pick Tyson Alualu that impressed Jaguars’ management was choosing to marry his high school sweetheart as an 18-year-old freshman at Cal, right after Alualu’s wife, Desire, became pregnant with their first child.
Alualu went through every year of college raising a son, Tyree, and then had a daughter, Dere’on, just before the start of his junior season. He skipped the 2005 fall semester, returning home to get married and being there for the birth of his son two months later.
The challenge of being a husband and father throughout college played out in Alualu’s favor with the Jaguars, who admired his maturity in handling the situation.
“[Desire] was pregnant at the time, and I knew she was the one I wanted to be with the rest of my life,” said Alualu, who begins his first minicamp today with the Jaguars. “It was definitely a blessing to have them there [at Cal]. It kept me grounded and motivated through college. It pushed me in school and on the field. I thought getting married was the right thing for me to do. She was definitely the woman for me. It’s been a blessing.
“I have to give a lot of credit to my wife. There was a lot of staying up late when the baby’s up. It’s about taking responsibility. That was my child, and I wanted to be there for them.”
Time will tell if Alualu was worth the No. 10 overall draft pick. But if he manages his business on the field as well as family matters off it, maybe he won’t be viewed as such a big “reach” after all. …

If the Jaguars’ 2010 draft class performs anywhere near as well as they talk and interact with people, especially Playstation 3-loving defensive end Austen Lane, fans might embrace these no-name guys better than they initially thought. …
Two of the Jaguars’ veteran linebacker acquisitions, Kirk Morrison and Freddy Keiaho, both played under assistant secondary coach Thom Kaumeyer when he was the defensive coordinator at San Diego State (2002-05). …
The Jaguars’ courtship of free safety Darren Sharper isn’t over, but they have to outbid the New Orleans Saints. It’s a question of how much more money Sharper wants to not return to a Super Bowl-ready team. …
